Daily Devotional for April 27
April 27 Luke 8:26-39
American Legion
I worked detox that night
And watched a man named William T. Jacobs
(at least that's who he said he was)
Pick something off his clothes all night.
All night, eight hours, one little thing
After another. Pluck, pluck, pluck.
"[deleted]" he'd say, "[deleted]."
He fell asleep toward morning,
Just in time for us
To wake him for a shot of valium.
Succumbing to its sterile absolution
He left his clothes alone.
I understand he died a few weeks later,
But they never knew if it was
Suicide or what.
Dear Creator,
I know there are a hundred obstacles between me and the per-
son I'm hoping to become. Show them to me one at a time,
and I will be grateful for each chance to grow. And when we
have slowly, quietly overcome my legion of personal demons,
let me celebrate with you and rest freely in the clear, warm
light of your loving Spirit.
